520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. During the second half of the 19th century, collection of human remains in New-Caledonia, supporting, for the National Museum of Natural History (Paris) in particular, the rise of the new anthropological science, fits into with French colonial politics and doctrine. Even beyond the nature of such objects, the circumstances and the motivations of this practice, its players and the future of the specimens resulting from it, are evidence of substantive relationships between military conquest and production of a scientific knowledge about the colony. The sense of impunity, which appears to characterize collection, also allows to putting them in a position to question the imperialist and evolutionist dualism generally accepted then, the one of the occidental and ‘‘civilized’’ civil servant facing the ‘‘barbaric native’’, and real practices on the New-Caledonian field.
