Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | The Gaullist deputies, who had, together with their RI allies, a slight majority at the Parlement since the 1967 general election, were shaken by the crisis of May 1968. As they had not made out the student discontent, as they had not assessed the true extent of this anti-authority activity, they seemed overtaken by the revolt of the Universities when it spread to the firms and paralysed the whole country mid May. Very quickly some Gaullist deputies were critical of the ministers suspected of being too weak with the rioters (A.Peyrefitte and C.Fouchet). On the contrary, a minority of left-wing Gaullist deputies (R.Capitant and E.Pisani) reproached the government for not listening enough to the street and campus protest. If the Gaullist group presented a united front during the parliamentarian debate on the censure motion, this solidarity spirit and this sense of discipline vanished during the last week of May. However can we conclude that the Gaullist deputies were “offside” in May 1968? More involved than supposed in the action of the Prime Minister Georges Pompidou, in fact some of them also participated actively in the organisation of the huge counter demonstration on the Champs-Élysées that gave a new impetus to the government. |
