| Summary, etc. |
| 520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
| Summary, etc. | This paper tries to understand the way in which mechanism of rumour can be mobilized in a colonial situation. Between the 1940s and independence, a protean rumour was identified by Belgian intelligence officers (renseignements généraux) in and around Leopoldville-Kinshasa, according to which Whites, assisted by black auxiliaries, were driving around in cars, hypnotising Congolese with an electric torch, then pricking them with a syringe and fattening them up before sending them to England or America, from where they returned in the form of tinned corned beef. Thus, rumour focused on a series of imported objects that were supposed to bring with them “Progress”. Through rumours, people expressed their fears, particularly of forced labour and forced conscription, contradicted the colonial view of cannibalism and turned the objects of power against colonial power and its local forms. |
