520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | The article suggests that the notion of mental retardation has punctuated medico-psychological science throughout the twentieth century. The first studies on children regularly addressed this topic and many of the names of doctors who have entered into History are associated with this notion. After the Second World War, the notion of mental retardation was particularly explored in the 1960s and it is popularized in the social body through the press in particular and became an important issue for the French school organization. Increasingly critical criticism was expressed later and we witnessed the decline and the disappearance of the term in the 1980s and following. The members themselves of the medico-psychological profession dropped out the term more for reasons related to the evolution of psychopathological ideas than under the pressure of critics. It is important to note that the categories of mental deficiency or intellectual disability are still present and that there are many reasons to believe that this is where the former mentally deficient child is. |
