Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | Briquet’s syndromeThe publication in 1850 by Pierre Briquet (1796-1881) of a clinical and therapeutic textbook on Hysteria was a landmark in the history of this disorder. The analysis of the rich phenomenology observed in a large number of patients, in particular men, during individual clinical examinations brought Briquet to refute the uterine origin. Moving away from that classic etiology since Antiquity he conceptualised hysteria as a “neurosis of the brain region intended to receive emotional impressions and feelings”. This modern conception influenced, through Charcot, authors at the end of the 19th century. Therefore therapeutics for Hysteria did not any longer require physical means. In the middle of the 20th century, the rediscovery of Briquet’works , one time forgotten, by the Saint Louis’s School of Medicine led to the adoption of "Briquet’s syndrome" as diagnostic category to designate in certain international contemporary classifications disturbances formerly labelled as hysteric. |
