Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | The archives and the history of psychiatry. 1st part : the sources and the worksSince half a century, most French books about the history of psychiatry give an important place to unpublished documents proceeding from archival sources in Paris, according to the time which is considered. Michel Foucault (1961, 1972) has essentially studied the manuscripts of the 18th century at the BibliothèqueNationale and the Bibliothèque de l’Arsenal. Dora Weiner (1977) has discovered at the Archives Nationales an important document on Pussin, the superintendant of Pinel. For the beginning of the 19th century, Gauchet and Swain (1980) have used administrative papers from the Archives Nationales and the Archives de l’Assistancepublique (minutes of the Conseil general des hospices). For the period 1838-1880, more clinical and medical documents, the registers of the 1838 law about newly admitted patients of the Salpêtrière and Bicêtre hospitals, have been studied, some times for statistics (Ripa, 1986 ; Goldstein, 1987 ; Edelman, 2003 ; Murat, 2011). Some departmental archives (Charuty, 1985), the registers of Paris private establishments (Murat, 2001 ; Edelman, 2003) or of provincial asylums (Quétel, 2009) have also been used for other works. These manuscripts have to be replaced in their context and confronted to the publications of their time. The archives are then heavily interesting for criticizing the myths and the legends and as a basis of a quantitative approach of the psychiatric hospitalization. |
