Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | Schizotypy and social cognition Schizophrenia is associated with a severe social handicap largely due to a social cognition deficit. An emerging area of research concerns social cognition skills in pre-morbid stages of schizophrenia, like schizotypy. Indeed, there is a set of arguments that indicates continuity between schizotypy and schizophrenia. In the field of social cognition, studies show that difficulties in processing social information are present in healthy subjects with schizotypy traits. These difficulties could be a factor that contributes to the progressive withdrawal that often precedes the onset of disorders and could also be an aggravating factor of evolution. At the same time, the few studies using indexes of brain activity accompanying social information processing reveal that schizotypal subjects have effective compensation capabilities that could be used not only as part of preventive interventions but also in cognitive remediation with patients. In sum, schizotypy is a fruitful paradigm for the study of the mechanisms underlying social cognition disorders observed in schizophrenia and which are key determinants of social disability associated with the disease. |
