520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | The extreme context of the intensive care unit regularly brings the healthcare workers face to face with death. Existential humanist psychology highlights what confrontation with death and the suffering of others generates, particularly in terms of the meaning of existence. The aim of our research is to gain a better understanding of how confrontation with death leads to the experience of existential questioning for doctors in neonatal intensive care. Using a qualitative, multicentric, retrospective method, 12 neonatology doctors participated in a semi-directive and individual interview, which was transcribed before a transversal thematic analysis. The results confirm that the experience of death has a profound impact on the personal experience of doctors, and is in turn influenced by it: each patient’s death is an event that has an impact on the doctor’s self-perception – which is expressed in a variety of dimensions of his or her identity (man/woman, doctor, parent, etc.) – and on his or her very existence. This research, which focuses on healthcare workers, highlights the importance of taking into account their psychological experience when confronted with the suffering and death of a patient. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. |
