520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. Among the oldest citadels in France, Doullens remains little studied. Occupied from the reign of François I until 1965, the fortress had many functions : state prison, preservation school for young girls, military hospital, detention camp, Buchenwald camp outdoor commando, women’s prison, reception centre for harkis… Such uses have permeated the site and it is enough to wander through the counter-mine galleries to realize this. The walls of the caves have preserved graffiti which offer an unexplored field of study. The soldiers of the two world wars – but also civilians during the Occupation – wrote or engraved a multitude of traces. In uncertain times when it is difficult to project oneself, inscribing one’s name, a date or even initials allows one to bear witness to one’s passage and to entrust the stone with the task of preserving this memory. A true identity process, the reading and study of these graffiti creates a link between several disciplines in history and archaeology. Some of the graffiti confirm an already known history, but a reasoned study has revealed new aspects of the history of this site.
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.
