| Summary, etc. | L’archéologie de la ville se heurte bien souvent à des difficultés quasi-insurmontables, dues principalement à la densité du tissu urbain contemporain. Le texte, l’archive, se doivent alors de l’épauler dans sa compréhension du tissu urbain ancien. Ainsi à Cambrai, rue Saint-Martin, les archives nous permettent-elles de redessiner, assez précisément, l’implantation urbaine à la fin du Moyen Âge. Infrastructures et bâtiments, en effet, se retrouvent dans les anciens chirographes : un travail de patience permet ensuite de les replacer dans la rue. Parfois même, des documents plus riches autorisent une lecture plus détaillée d’un lieu : on a ainsi pu décrire avec un luxe de détails l’hôtel dit « à l’Epervier » sis en cette rue Saint-Martin. De ce fait, et bien qu’elles ne puissent en aucun cas remplacer la fouille, les archives s’avèrent de précieux alliés dans la lecture du schéma urbain ancien. |

| Summary, etc. | The Contribution of the Archives to Urban Archaeology : Cambrai and the Case of the Rue Saint-Martin (XIIIth-XVth centuries)Urban archaeology too often encounters quasi-insuperable obstacles, mainly as a consequence of the density of today’s urban occupation. Written documents, archives, must then help it to understand the ancient urban occupation. Thus in Cambrai, in the rue Saint-Martin, archives allow us to draw a fairly accurate picture of urban implantation at the end of the Middle-Ages. Infrastructures and buildings can, indeed, be found in the ancient chirographs : a long and patient work allows then to position them again along the street. Sometimes even, richer documents lead to a more accurate reading of a site : one was thus able to produce a thorough description of the so-called « à l’Epervier » hotel situated in this same street. Consequently, and though they cannot in any way replace excavations, archives prove to be invaluable allies in the reading of the ancient urban grid. |
