| Summary, etc. | Cet article retrace les 124 années d’histoire du ballon rond olympique. Le football a pris une part importante dans l’histoire des Jeux olympiques et, symétriquement, ceux-ci ont aussi joué un rôle crucial dans la construction du football international. Le ballon rond a contribué à la réinvention de la tradition olympique tout en devenant rapidement controversé en raison du professionnalisme. Le football a renforcé la viabilité économique des Jeux olympiques, malgré l’hostilité des dirigeants du CIO, menant à la création de la Coupe du monde pour les professionnels. Pendant la guerre froide, il a révélé les contradictions de l’olympisme avec les faux amateurs de l’Est. De plus, le football est devenu une tribune pour les pays africains et les femmes bien qu’il ait fallu attendre 1996 pour qu’elles puissent y participer. Son statut de sport mondial numéro un lui garantit une place permanente, alors même que le CIO envisage de nouvelles disciplines comme le breakdance ou le basket à trois. |

Football has played an important role in the history of the Olympic Games and, symmetrically, the Games have played a crucial role in shaping international football. Football has enhanced the economic viability of the Olympic Games, despite the hostility of IOC officials, leading to the creation of the World Cup for professionals.
