Malgré son omniprésence dans la nouvelle théorie de Kohut comme contrepoids à l’interprétation de la fonction de neutralité dans la Psychologie du moi, l’empathie semble plus repérable dans son absence – le manque d’empathie – que dans sa présence. Le mot ne couvre-t-il pas un désir de la part de l’analyste de se mettre en contact “ direct ” avec le soi (self) du patient comme partenaire dans l’échange thérapeutique, plutôt qu’aucune référence précise ? L’auteur propose que le terme “ empathie ” exprime une “ métaphysique de présence ” (Derrida, 1974) liée à une conception du soi qui touche à un idéal religieux |

| Summary, etc. | ZusammenfassungIndem er sich auf die Geschichte der Psychoanalyse in der USA sowie auch auf seine eigene Erfahrung bezieht, stellt sich der Autor Fragen über das Wort “ Empathie ” in der Psychologie des Selbst. Trotz seiner Allgegenwart in der neuen Theorie von Kohut als Gegengewicht zur Deutung, der Funktion der Neutralität in der Ichpsychologie, scheint die Empathie mehr in seiner Absenz (das Fehlen von Empathie) als in seiner Präsenz erkannt zu werden. Deckt das Wort nicht den Wunsch des Analytikers, sich mit dem Self des Patienten in “ direkten ” Kontakt zu setzen, als Partner im therapeutischen Austausch, eher als ohne präzise Referenz ?
