520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | Until the 1990s, the historical study of slavery was confined to Antiquity. Following Georges Duby, medieval historians focused their research on how serfdom had replaced ancient slavery around the year 1000. The ambiguity of the vocabulary ( servus ; ancilla), the way in which medieval literature considered most manual workers as “infamous” and excluded them from the community, obscured their perception of slavery. Ongoing research on Mediterranean countries in the 15th and 16th centuries shows that, on the contrary, the slave trade remained alive throughout the Middle Ages. The slave trade was not born ex nihilo. Aren’t these historiographical gaps finally due to a long repression of the absolute domination that is slavery? |
