520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. The present article discusses the case of Alli Trygg as a recipient of foreign ideas and influences by focusing on Victorian Philanthropy and Toynbee Hall : what choices did she make in terms of social reforms and how did foreign examples and organisations motivate her activities in her homeland? Alli Trygg-Helenius is known in Finnish history writing as a prominent temperance worker and the founder of the first settlement house in Helsinki, following the example of Toynbee Hall in East London. In discussions of Toynbee Hall and Victorian philanthropy, historians have often criticised the moralism and the authoritarian approach of an entire generation of philanthropists and reformers. Recent research, however, has paid attention to the contribution of projects such as Toynbee Hall to the development of educational and national contexts. Research on Alli Trygg is scarce. The article fills a gap in the understanding of Alli Trygg’s choices from a comparative perspective. It argues that the use of ideas from abroad was a conscious choice for reformers such as Alli Trygg and her husband Matti Helenius at a time when nationalism was the driving force of Finnish society.
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.
