Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | François Jacob’s The Logic of life is commonly read as a contribution to historical epistemology. Moving beyond this received view, this article shows, firstly, that the need for a history of the study of living beings emerged out of his own scientific practice. Secondly, I demonstrate that Jacques Monod’s biological conception of the growth of science (selection of ideas) is what prompted Jacob to write a history in terms of a series of emerging objects in the history of biological thought. In the end, this re-examination of the history of biology, I argue, resulted in a singular historical work in accordance with others at the time (such as Foucault and, before him, Canguilhem), but is not the sign of a direct influence of these other readings on his thinking. Overall, even if it exhibits certain features of historical epistemology, The Logic of life is primarily the work of a biologist who was led to history by the context of his research. |
