En réalité, les conflictualités internes sont largement liées aux tensions politiques et sociales et les conflits interétatiques ressortent le plus souvent de rivalités de puissances. Celles-ci instrumentalisent alors l’argumentaire confessionnel parmi d’autres éléments de mobilisation. La rivalité entre l’Arabie saoudite et l’Iran est l’une des plus structurantes depuis 1979. |

| Summary, etc. | Conflicts in the Middle-East are often portrayed as resulting from religious factors – in particular the opposition between Sunnism and Shiism. In reality, internal conflicts are broadly related to political and social tensions, whereas inter-state conflicts are most often about power rivalries. As one element of mobilization among others, these rivalries serve to instrumentalise the denominational argument.
