520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. If the will is not reason, but if both contribute to free choice, can one overcome the separation between reason and will? Following Grosseteste, the concept of root could be used for a certain time to conceptualize soul’s identity with itself, despite the plurality and distinction of its powers. But is the model of root, which suggests that the powers come forth from the soul so as to separate themselves from the soul, well suited to account for this identity within difference? I examine the use of this model by three Oxford thinkers of the mid-thirteenth century, and then the way Aquinas takes it up, before considering Duns Scotus’s choice of the idea of a continentia unitiva.
