520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. The “Affair of the Templars”, which began in 1307, is brought to an end by the canons Vox in excelso (March 1312) and Ad Providam (May 1312) promulgated during the Council of Vienne by the Pope Clement V. The Order of the Knights Templar is dissolved without being condemned ; its possessions are given to the Order of the Knights Hospitaller of Saint John of Jerusalem which just happened to settle in Rhodes. The Council of Vienne has dealt with other questions (crusade, mission) but it was first convened to find an issue to the Affair of the Templars. It thus represents the final phase of a procedure that Clement V began in 1308 to bring back into the Church an affair initiated by the King Philip IV the Fair in 1307 with complete disregard for law and jurisdiction. The question of “the Knights Templar and the Council of Vienne” also implies to appeal to these papal procedures that were engaged against the Knights Templar as person as well as an Order.
