520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | Viroids are the smallest non-coding infectious RNAs (between 246 and 401 nucleotides) known to be highly structured and replicate autonomously in the host plants. Although they do not encode any peptides, viroids induce visible symptoms in susceptible host plants. This article provides an overview of their physical and biological properties, the diseases they cause and their significance for the plants. The mechanisms underlying the expression of symptoms in host plants, their detection and various strategies employed for diseases prevention are also developed. |

Summary, etc. |
