| Summary, etc. | RésuméL’économie italienne, dont les taux de croissance ont été remarquablement élevés pendant les années 1950-1960, est devenue, en ce début du 21e siècle, la lanterne rouge de la zone euro. Cette médiocre performance est, en grande partie, attribuable à l’incompatibilité entre une régulation macro-économique nationale dont la redistribution, en particulier entre le Nord et le Sud, a longtemps constitué un moteur essentiel, et les choix européens que l’Italie a faits, notamment en matière monétaire, à partir de 1979. En effet, le financement de cette redistribution interrégionale n’a longtemps été possible que grâce à l’inflation et à la dépréciation externe de la monnaie, puis à l’augmentation de l’endettement public. Avec l’adoption de l’euro et des règles de finances publiques européennes, de tels expédients sont désormais proscrits. |

| Summary, etc. | The Italian economy with its remarkably high growth levels in the 1950s is now bringing up the euro-zone rear in the 21st century. This mediocre result is largely attributable to the incompatibility between national macro-economic regulation whose redistribution, particularly between North and South, was considered an essential locomotive for a long time, and the European choices Italy made, particularly in monetary policy, as of 1979. The financing of this interregional redistribution had been possible for a long time only thanks to inflation and foreign depreciation of the currency, and then to the increase in public debt.
