Summary, etc. |

Summary, etc. | The Free French Elephant: Babar, Romain Gary and Free FranceThe weekly BBC program devoted to the adventures of Babar between July 1941 and May 1944 does not seem to have left a mark in collective memory. However, this program for the children of France is far from simple entertainment when considered with Romain Gary’s novel that won the Goncourt prize in 1956, Les Racines du ciel. What do Babar and Les Racines du ciel have in common? The elephant. As one of the most famous figures in children’s literature, Babar, or as an advocate of human rights in Gary’s novel, the elephant embodies an essential dimension when it pertains to the ideal France: grandeur. It was the elephant that affirmed the grandeur of France in a world temporarily embodied in Free France and that legitimized resistance every time human rights were trampled on by the Nazis under the Occupation, or through a wrongful interpretation of the law in Tchad, in the 1950s. |
