Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | On the Ambiguous Nature of Words The ambiguous nature of Words allows the work of our ‘thought production factory’to produce dreams, jokes, lapsus linguae, psychoanalytical interpretations, or even literary creativity or theoretical constructions. In ideological language – an extreme example of which can be seen in the analyses of Hitler’s language by Victor Klemperer, but less extreme cases can also be found in any ideological use of language at any period in history – the play on words is no longer possible, the two faces of the sign are riveted together and only allow what has already been said and thought to be said and thought by others, with no room for manoeuvre. Words and behaviour thus form a system of unequivocal meaning which function like suggestive hypnotic injunctions and which can cause profound psychic modifications in the minds of those to whom this language is addressed. Freud sheds light on this in his work The Psychology of the Masses. How are such diametrically opposed uses of language possible ? That is the question lying at the horizon of this article. |
