520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. Effets des Passions (Anon., 1776) : the source Of 'Delle Passioni, Traduzione di Giacomo Casanova.' The work of Giacomo Casanova turns constantly around the theme of the drives -  Lana Caprina (1772), a critique of Frederick the Great (c. 1788), À Leonard Snetlage (1797), and Histoire de ma Vie (1789-1797, op. post.). In these works, Casanova, at once libertine and man of erudition, begs the question of how to ‘control’ his drives. Delle Passioni was no doubt not written by Casanova (error of Di Trocchio and Marie-Françoise Luna, 2002) but was translated by him, as the sub-title suggests : ‘Traduzione di Giacomo Casanova’. Excellently translated it is too. We discover that the source of the Casanova’s painstaking labour is the work of an anonymous French author, and bears the title Effets des Passions, des Plaisirs, de l’Éducation et de la Négociation (1776). Later in his memoires, Casanova’s translation of the chapter entitled ‘Des Passions’ (circa 1781) is echoed in his theory on empathy or theatrical endosmosis, in which the agent, far from being passive, establishes an affective bond with the surroundings as if contaminated by drives.
