520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | The ‘Société Royale d’Archéologie de Bruxelles’conducted a below-ground survey to examine the foundations of the tower of Brussels Town Hall. The foundations appear to be shallow, but are actually very thick. They consist of masonry composed mainly of sandy limestone rubble, together with by some fragments of reused brick, in line with construction techniques used in the 14th and 15th centuries. The position of the upper foundation offset indicates that the current ground level has not changed since the time when the tower was built. The structure’s foundation trench cuts across earlier sediments containing, among other things, shards of pottery dating from the late 12th and 13th centuries. Palynological analyses can be used to reconstruct local vegetation during this period. |
