Les painkillers sont des embarcations miniatures fabriquées par des kayakistes eux-mêmes. À partir d’une approche articulant l’anthropologie et l’histoire du temps présent, il s’agit d’analyser leur contexte d’émergence et les usages associés : de leur fabrication à leur mise à l’eau. Notre enquête montre que ces différentes activités sont autant d’étapes participant d’une acculturation des joueurs. Par l’intermédiaire d’une rhétorique du fun, ces jouets permettent une initiation au kayak ludique.

Painkillers are miniature boats made by kayakers themselves. With an approach articulating anthropology and current history, we analyze the background and the associated uses: from their hand-making to their launching. Our investigation shows that these different activities are all stages in a player’s acculturation. Through a rhetoric of fun, these toys provide an initiation to playboating.
