A Lover: The First French Translation of Wuthering Heights by Téodor de Wyzewa
Type de matériel :
43
Our study is focused on T. de Wyzewa’s translation of Wuthering Heights in 1892 as Un amant ( A Lover). The title, the preface and the omissions are the result of the Brontë mythology aiming at foreclosing textual issues. Echoing the narratorial position, the translator’s stance can be read as an illustration of the relationship between men and the feminine in the nineteenth century later subsumed by Breuer and Freud’s pairing of the hysterical woman and her master in their Studies on Hysteria (1894).
