Historiography has studied students since the history of education first emerged as an academic specialism, both in the case of modern history and other historical periods. The pioneers of this history have provided information about students – both girls and boys – in the institutional context of the Ancien Régime (16-17th centuries), gleaned from administrative sources (small schools, colleges, special education institutions). However, an overview of this work offers the opportunity to reread the sources identified in order to fine-tune the portrait of these students in their daily lives, in familiar surroundings, in their behaviour. The aim is to consider students as stakeholders in their own right.
