RésuméLa migration des joueurs africains vers l’Europe remonte bien avant la grande extraversion du football africain. À travers les trajectoires de joueurs africains, comme celles d’Arthur Wharton, de Larbi Ben Barek, d’Eusébio ou de Salif Keita, l’article suit ces circulations depuis les années 1910 jusqu’à la fin des années 1970. Ces destins ont contribué à véhiculer les imaginaires, les passions et les enjeux politiques. Selon les époques, les joueurs sont des « indigènes », des « assimilés », des « travailleurs immigrés » ou des vedettes internationales issues d’un « réservoir de talents ».

The History of the First Migrations of African Players to EuropeThe migration of Africa players to Europe dates much further back than the more recent massive outflow of African footballers. Taking the example of the career paths of players like Arthur Wharton, Larbi Ben Barek, Eusébio and Salif Keita, this paper traces such moves from 1910 to the end of the 1970s. These life courses serve as vectors for the imagination, for passions and for political interests. Depending on the epoch, the players are seen as “natives”, “assimilated”, “migrant workers” or international stars drawn from a global “talent pool”.
