Dans cet article nous envisageons le bilinguisme territorial dans les provinces historiques roumaines comme cause des causes de la traduction (action et résultat), dont les traducteurs feront ressortir les méthodes pour « mettre en langue » roumaine des œuvres européennes et contribuer, de la sorte, aussi bien à l’autonomie linguistique et nationale qu’à la formation des institutions et des canons littéraires roumains au xixe siècle. À cette fin, nous corrélons des faits historiques et linguistiques, mentalitaires et sociologiques, que nous reportons aux civilisations traduites et à la culture traduisante – en l’occurrence roumaine.

This article will examine territorial bilingualism – present in the historical princedoms of Romania – as the primary cause of translation (seen as both action and result), whence translators extract methods for transferring European works into Romanian and contributing in this way both to the linguistic and national autonomy and to the establishment of Romanian literary institutions and canons in the nineteenth century. In this examination, we will correlate historical and linguistic facts, as well as mentality and sociological aspects, which we relate to the translated civilizations and to the translating (i.e., Romanian) culture.
