Ouvrir un livre, c’est être accueilli par des mots, c’est aussi accueillir une parole de l’absent. Comment un ou plusieurs personnages d’un livre s’incarnent dans notre esprit ? Comment après avoir terminé un livre le lecteur peut ressentir l’apparence fantomatique de tel ou tel personnage sans disposer d’aucune idée précise de sa représentation ? Pourquoi lorsqu’un livre est mis en scène par le cinéma – outre le jeu des interprétations – un lecteur peut être déçu de ne pas « reconnaître » les personnages qu’il avait intimement fabriqués ? De telles questions interrogent la fabrique des voix et des visions internes, apparitions évanescentes, durant la traversée d’un livre.

Close reading of and listening to the other To open a book is to be greeted by words, but it is also to receive the word of the absent figure. How are one or several characters in a book embodied in our minds ? How, after finishing a book, can the reader sense the phantomatic appearance of this or that character, with no idea of his/her representation ? Why, when a book is adapted for the cinema – beyond the influence of how characters are interpreted – can a reader be disappointed not to “ recognise ” the characters he has fabricated within himself ? Questions like this are used to examine the fabrication of voices and internal visions, evanescent apparitions, as one goes through a book.
