This article draws on an interview-based study conducted among parents (n=88) in Paris and Milan, to shed light on the role of the school as an institution in the process of children’s urban socialisation. In exploring the urban aspect of the socialising effects of school experience, it shows how families’ choice of school constitutes a source of social differentiation in the socialisation to the town and the neighbourhood, and that this ultimately contributes to producing inequalities between children.
