Les poids métalliques du Proche‑Orient hellénistique et romain appartiennent pour la plupart au « nouveau style hellénistique » de Méditerranée orientale. Ils sont essentiellement émis par les cités, à partir de l’époque séleucide, et constituent une importante source d’information, tant par leur iconographie que par leurs inscriptions. Les poids civiques qui disparaissent presque partout au IVe siècle p. C. se maintiennent exceptionnellement à l’époque protobyzantine dans quelques cités comme Tyr.

Weights and civic life in the Hellenistic and Roman Near East In the Hellenistic and Roman Near East, most of the metal weights are related to the “new hellenistic style” of the Eastern Mediterranean. Mainly produced by poleis, from the times of the Seleucid rule, these objects offer important information thanks to their iconography and inscriptions. City weights disappear nearly everywhere during rhe fourth century, with a few exceptions in the early Byzantine period, for exemple in Tyre.
