Video-feedback systems in child welfare - a means to stimulate the reflective function of foster carers and natural parents

The child in care has often experienced trauma having impacted their ability to regulate their emotions in interpersonal relationships. In order to help carers and parents better adjust to the child, video recorded observation times were organised under natural adult-child interaction conditions. The video feedback was then used with each of the adults. The example of Matthias shows how this intervention enabled the parents to identify their behaviour’s consequences on the child’s attitudes. The exercise was more difficult for the foster carer, who was more focused on her own needs.
