Hasn’t Catholicism recently given in to the charm or recent socio-cultural prestige of abstract art? One wonders at the number of churches in Western Europe where the “white wall” has become the norm, if not the rule, sanctioned by church authorities bent on “modernity,” not to mention the number of church paintings and stained-glass windows that seem to follow the law or ideal of making bright colors triumph at the expense of identifiable religious figures or iconographic subjects.
