In this paper, we investigate the interactions of a group of friends in a cooperative game who, at the end of the game, eventually categorised one of them as ‘the leader.’ Using the players’ ‘gut feeling’ as our starting point, we carry out analyses based on quantitative indicators, as well as qualitative analyses, with the tools of Conversation Analysis, in order to understand this retrospective appraisal of the game play. In our analysis, we first look at the conception of collaboration that emerges in the interaction, before examining the dynamics of this so-called leadership. The social positioning of the participants, according to their expertise in the game and their participation in the decision-making process, allows us to approach different facets of playing/collaborating and to analyse leadership as something co-constructed by all players.
