Negotiations and Transactions: A Shared Socio-Anthropological Foundation

The approaches to negotiation in the social sciences and the sociology of social transactions initially followed separate paths and have gradually converged over the last twenty years. This paper traces this convergence and suggests historical and social interactionism as a shared socio-anthropological foundation for such convergence. In so doing, the author considers exchanges, reviews, and cooperation among researchers as an illustration of a collaboration in conflict, aimed at developing a compromise of coexistence in which negotiation and transaction merge.
