This paper examines the formation of Islamist hegemony by shedding light on alliances constructed with specific segments of the Sudanese society. More specifically, it discusses alliances formed with members of the Zaghawa-Darfurian ethnic community, with a special focus on economic matters. I argue that changes in the alliance—produced by the Islamists’ rise to power—explain why different groups within the Zaghawa ethnic community now support the rebellion in Darfur.
