When is a product of the culture industry a “political work”?

Par : Type de matériel : TexteTexteLangue : français Détails de publication : 2011. Ressources en ligne : Abrégé : In this article, the author first reminds us of the barrier that has long separated the legitimate arts from the industrial arts, and has precluded the products of the latter being considered in political terms. Today, the study of “media cultures” seems to be reaching maturity, and new questions are ushering in new problems, notably on the potential political role of television series and performers, among others. Inspired by the work of Stuart Hall, Stanley Fish, and Judith Butler, the article proposes that a cultural object be seen to play a political role only if an interpretive community attributes such a role to it in a specific social context.
