Families and nursery school 50 years after “Le ‘métier d’enfant’”. Primary language socialisation, “free exploration” and secondarisation of early childhood

Based on a field survey carried out in the 2010s, the article describes the actualisation of the “discovery of the child as a pedagogical object” in different social groups. By analysing how children’s activities and exploration are facilitated, it shows that stable fractions of the working classes have grown closer to certain educational expectations while, in social classes better equipped with material and cultural resources, educational practices shape dispositions to secondarisation.
