The unknown pastedown of the BRUXELLES, KBR, 11052 manuscript. An unpublished account of literary life at the court of the Dukes of Burgundy

This paper introduces and puts into perspective an unpublished prologue to a French translation of Saint Anselm’s three homilies on the Virgin Mary, completed for Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy. The prologue, a kind of false start by the translator, appears on the pastedown of the Bruxelles, KBR, ms. 11052. The discovery means that the translation can be attributed to Jean Eustache, Abbot of Nizelles and dated ( ca 1400). New light can be shed on the role of Duchess Isabella of Portugal in the cultural and literary life at the court of Burgundy in general, and, in particular, in the movement to translate texts into French.
