The comparison of costs between the public and private for-profit sectors comes up quite often in public debate. However, we must be careful not to generalize, as there are a number of elements—with evidence behind them—that explain the difference in costs. Second, we identify three reasons for these differing costs: the difference in activity, patient recruitment, and the cost of real estate.
