Among the Greeks of the Trojan War, Nestor, the oldest of the kings, represents wisdom, reflection, and self-control in the face of Achilles’ ardor and Agamemnon’s anger. More ambivalent is the biblical world, which affords the elders in the community pride of place when it comes to governing, but which is also wary of their lechery (cf. Susanna and the elders. Daniel, 13). The modern world often rejects the values of antiquity as obsolete and despises the old; transhumanists seek an eternal youth that has become the new paradigm. The new models are rather to be sought in the contemporary figures of a Guillaume Rozier, CovidTracker, or Thomas Pesquet, astronomer… Reflecting on tradition, Heidegger reversed this perspective, affirming that antiquity is not behind us in a bygone past, but on the contrary stands before us, inviting us to pursue our values (respect is a value never accomplished, always on the job in each moment of professional life). Antiquity is therefore a call from the future and not from the past. Our past is in fact our childhood, certainly full of promise, but also quite immature.
