La diplomatie épistolaire en langue arabe appartient dans les régions du Sahel et du Sahara aux usages politiques ordinaires. Lorsqu’au tournant du xxe siècle, les militaires français pénètrent dans ces régions, se noue, entre ces nouveaux venus et les souverains locaux, un dialogue épistolaire selon les termes des pratiques diplomatiques locales, c’est-à-dire en langue arabe et dans un environnement intellectuel marqué par la culture islamique.

A Time for Letter-writingEpistolary diplomacy in the Arabic language, in the Sahel and Sahara, is common political practice. When, at the turn of the twentieth century, the French military entered these areas, the newcomers and the local rulers developed, under the terms of the local diplomatic practices, an epistolary dialogue which was carried on in Arabic and in an intellectual environment marked by Islamic culture.
