Les doctrines d’engagement des armées évoluent constamment en fonction des expériences de terrain. Au Sahel, les armées françaises ont mis en œuvre des conceptions héritées à la fois de leur histoire et des leçons tirées des interventions internationales des récentes décennies : interventions dans les Balkans ou « guerre contre le terrorisme ». En dépit de certains succès, ces conceptions se sont souvent avérées mal adaptées au milieu humain, social et politique des pays du Sahel.

Military doctrines of engagement are constantly evolving in line with experience in the field. In the Sahel, the French armed forces have implemented concepts inherited both from their own history and from the lessons learned from international interventions of recent decades, in the Balkans and the so-called war against terrorism. Despite some successes, these concepts have often proved ill-suited to the human, social, and political environment of Sahelian countries.
