La traduction constitue un maillon essentiel de la construction communicationnelle de l’engagement citoyen au sein des mouvements sociaux transnationaux. Afin de rendre compte de ce rôle, nous nous pencherons sur Babels, le réseau international de traducteurs et interprètes volontaires, qui considère que la traduction et l’interprétation (ainsi que la diversité linguistique et culturelle dont elles sont garantes) sont inhérentes au processus de transformation sociale à l’échelle planétaire porté par l’altermondialisme. Nous structurerons notre analyse autour de la dialectique entre contrainte et liberté qui, au sein de ce mouvement social transnational, se déploie autour de quatre sous-dialectiques : représentation/participation, révolution/délibération, événement/processus, verticalité/horizontalité.

‪Translation constitutes a critical link for the communicational construction of civic engagement within transnational social movements. In an attempt to account for this role, I will focus on Babels, the international network of volunteer translators and interpreters, which considers translation and interpreting (as well as linguistic and cultural diversity) to be inherent to the process of world-wide social transformation processes sparked by the alter-globalisation movement. The analysis will be structured around the dialectic between freedom and constraints which, within this transnational social movement, takes the shape of four sub-dialectics: representation/participation, revolution/deliberation, event/process, verticality/horizontality. ‪
