Le statut de la langue dans l’espace germanophone est un enjeu essentiel au xixe siècle pour la construction de l’identité allemande. Facteur d’unité, l’allemand devient, dans la seconde moitié du siècle, une ressource cruciale pour le projet national. Dans ce contexte, la langue peut aussi faire l’objet d’une instrumentalisation au service d’une entreprise nationaliste. La première moitié du xxe siècle représente la période où la langue allemande est de plus en plus subordonnée à un projet de domination qui se substitue aux éléments identitaires.

Identity building and language status in nineteenth-century German speaking areaThe language status was a crucial issue in the building up of German identity in the 19th Century. Being a factor in unity, German became a key resource for the national project in the second half of the century. In this context, the language could also be turned into an instrument for nationalistic endeavors. In the first half of the 20th Century, the German language became more and more subservient to a domination project superseding the constituents of identity.
