L’étude de la correspondance entre le traducteur Antonio Alatorre et Marcel Bataillon, érudit hispaniste, auteur du livre Érasme et l’Espagne, permet de mettre en lumière la logique du processus de traduction de cette œuvre majeure qui connut un grand succès dans sa version espagnole. L’analyse de cette correspondance met en relief l’ardu et précis travail de révision (au sens large du terme) réalisé par A. Alatorre entre la première édition de 1950 et la deuxième de 1966. L’impératif de l’érudition et une véritable contrainte obsessionnelle centrée sur la recherche des « défaillances » guident la rigoureuse démarche autocritique du traducteur qui s’engage dans une véritable retraduction dont on aperçoit ici les enjeux.

The study of the correspondence between the translator Antonio Alatorre and Marcel Bataillon, erudite Hispanist and the author of the work Érasme et l’Espagne, makes it possible to uncover the logics of the translation process of this major work, which has been very successful in its Spanish version. The analysis of this correspondence puts into relief the very precise and difficult work of revision (in the broad sense of the word) realised by Alatorre between the first edition of 1950 and the second one of 1966. The imperative of erudition and an obsessional constraint that centres on the search for “ failures” guide the rigorous method of auto-criticism of the translator, who engages himself in a veritable re-translation of which one sees the challenges here.
