L’enjeu de l’article est d’établir que l’œuvre de l’une des toutes premières théoriciennes du travail social, Mary E. Richmond, fut profondément travaillée par la volonté de légitimer le travailleur social comme professionnel. Face à la critique portée par Abraham Flexner s’établit une stratégie se comprenant au regard de ce qu’Andrew Abbott nomme système de professions, stratégie dont le développement et la promotion de la méthode du social case work se révèlent être les pièces maîtresses. Enfin, l’article s’interroge sur la pérennité historique de ce qui apparaît comme l’un des modèles professionnalistes propres au travail social développés au xxe siècle.
