In an interview conducted by Charlotte Szas and published in ‘Die Welt’, Alenka Zupančič uses Antigone to show how the Freudian hypothesis of the unconscious has introduced a division that allow us to rethink sex, sexuality and gender differently. The trans issue appears, from the feminine perpective, as the return of the ‘repressed other’. Identity is no longer a matter of sexuality since it does not derive from biology nor from nature but is a symbolic construct.

Dans une traduction inédite d’un entretien avec Charlotte Szas paru en Allemagne dans Die Welt, « Il y a plus d’un sexe et moins de deux », Alenka Zupancic montre à partir d’Antigone combien l’hypothèse de l’inconscient freudien a introduit une division qui permet de penser autrement le sexe, la sexualité et le genre. La question trans apparaît du côté féminin comme le retour d’un « autre réprimé ». L’identité n’est pas qu’une discussion sur la sexualité, car cette dernière s’accomplit en dehors du biologique comme un arrachement au « naturel » pour créer une identité symbolique.
